It should be the begining of a brand new life for the lucky men who will hear their name called during this ceremony, because that's a real accomplishment for those who always dreamed about this moment for so long.
They fought for that all of the years they spent as student, from high school to College.
Most of them chose, for that matter, their university just for the football program and Draft day will tell them if they made the right choice.
Before that, a long studying on every players available was made. The scouts (people who analyze players' skills in professional sports) made a chart of these guys.
Of course NFL teams base their choices on this chart, but not only.
Their choice depends on their needs, I mean they won't choose a quarterback if they need a safety.
So scouts' preview establish this chart:

  1. Darren McFadden (Running back, Arkansas)
  2. Chris Long (Defensive end, Virginia)
  3. Jake Long (Offensive tackle, Michigan)
  4. Glenn Dorsey (Defensive tackle, LSU)
  5. Matt Ryan (Quarterback, Boston College)

Here are the eventual first five overall picks but the only question is, will the teams choose these players and do they really need a player at this position?.
This year the selection order by team will be this one:

  • Miami Dolphins
  • St Louis Rams
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Oackland Raiders
  • KansasCity Chiefs

The place you choose with depends on your previous season results.
For example the New york Giants that won Superbowl XLII will choose on 32nd and dead last, worst teams choose first.
There are often very good players who fly under the radar, one of them from 2006 NFL Draft is New Orleans Saints' receiver Marques Colston selected 252nd pick in the 7th round.
For those who know a little NFL football they know that Marques Colston was a starter in his rookie season, he helped so well Reggie Bush (2nd overall draft pick) to lead the Saints to the NFC Divisionnal game but they lost against the Bears.

How could we talk about draft steals without talking about Tom brady's case, this guy was selected with the 199th overall pick in the 6th round.
He was called, in the middle of a game, to replace Drew Bledsoe, who was injured and, from that moment, he will never leave his starter role.
He did even more, he helped New England to build a dinasty and he puts his name already among the best quarterbacks in NFL history, with some big names like Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway, Brett Favre who retired since last week.

Brady's a future hall of famer, there's no doubt about that!
The key thing is, no matter the pick number you are selected with because scouts are unable to estimate the motivation you will play with...I'd tell you one thing, if you hear your name called by a professionnal football team on Draft day, you'll be already a winner before playing your first game...

Last minute 19.04.08: A great quarterback annonces his retirement after Brett Favre, his name's Steve McNair.
